Black History Month: a conversation with Yve Montaz

As Moorepay marks Black History Month 2025, we’re reflecting on this year’s theme, Standing Firm in Power and Pride. At its heart, the theme is about confidence, self-belief and integrity. It’s about knowing who you are, taking pride in where you come from, and carrying that strength with you into everything you do. Few people embody these values more naturally than Yve Montaz, our Employment Tribunal Advocate here at Moorepay. We sat down with Yve to talk about how power and pride show up in…

Is unlimited annual leave all it’s cracked up to be?

Unlimited annual leave sounds like the ultimate workplace perk. Take as much time off as you want, whenever you want. No carryover spreadsheets, no accrual maths, no awkward “can I take those extra two days?” conversations. It’s a policy that’s been making headlines for years and is often touted as the next big step in flexible working. But is it really the game-changer it’s made out to be? Or is it, as some experts suggest, just a “sticking plaster” for deeper workplace problems? Why unlimited…

High performance or high pressure?

Do you expect your employees to be high performers? No doubt the answer to that is “yes”. And I’m sure that’s what every company would like to say about their employees. Unfortunately, though, that’s not always the case. Being expected to be a ‘high performer’ can also bring with it a vast amount of high pressure. As you are most likely aware, many employees fair very well under pressure, but there are also those who don’t. So, what do you do with those who can’t…

Handling flexible working requests fairly, starting from day one

Flexible working has been a hot topic for years, but the legal changes back in April 2024 has pushed it back to the top of the agenda. Employees can now make a flexible working request from their very first day in a new job, which has left many employers asking ‘how do we handle this fairly?’ It sounds simple, but in practice it raises a few questions. What if a new starter asks to change their hours before they’ve even settled in? How do you…

Employers: get ready for enhanced employee rights to flexible working

As part of its mission to ‘make work pay’, the UK government has confirmed plans to encourage further take up of flexible working.  The proposals, to ‘strengthen’ employee rights to flexible working, are aimed squarely at helping working parents to balance work and home life.   Flexible working generally covers working arrangements outside of the typical 9-5 that suit both the employee and employer in terms of when, where, and how work is done. It could take the form of: Part-time, staggered or compressed hours…

Why poor wellbeing support is costing you your best employees

With the number of new job opportunities rising, employees now have more choice than ever before. This means businesses must go beyond simply offering a competitive salary in order to recruit and retain employees. They have to show that they care. Employees are looking beyond salaries and job role expectations, and instead are searching for a workplace that they can call home. They are seeking employers that genuinely care about their wellbeing - including what support is in place, and what the company values. What…

How to handle unauthorised absence the right way

Unauthorised absence is one of the more frustrating issues for any manager or HR professional to deal with. It disrupts workflow, unsettles team morale, creates avoidable admin headaches and left unchecked; it can set a dangerous precedent for the rest of the team. Whilst no-one expects perfect attendance at all times, there’s a clear line between genuine authorised absence and simply failing to show up without notice and without explanation. Handled properly, unauthorised absence doesn’t need to lead to conflict or spiralling. With a structured…

April’s taxation tsunami repercussions

According to The Times, and particularly since April’s hikes in Minimum Wage and National Insurance, advertised employment vacancies have dropped significantly. In fact, there’s been a reduction in ten of the last twelve months. Clearly this is not all down to the April changes, but they have undoubtedly impacted. Estimates suggest a drop in employment vacancies of between 20 – 25% between June 2024 and June 2025. Conversely, listings seeking freelancers, consultants and contractors have ramped up by 20% over the last twelve months. It’s…
